Henry Jenkins proposed a critique of media institutions as participatory and centred- uniquely among industries- on prosumerism rather than consumerism. The media prosumer takes a media product or products, adapts and combines and thereby adds value, but he is crucially distinct from the artisan as this added value is cultural rather than economic. This is not consuming flour and water and producing bread, nor consuming leather and nails and producing shoes. This is bronies youtubing videos of text-poached My Little Pony clips, bricolaged into a pastiches of iconic horror films; fan-fiction of such quality that published authors scout it for ideas; cosplayers meticulously reproducing filmprops with 3D printers in maker-spaces; Sparrow pirating the high seas of public domain images and fusing them to blockchain addresses and Spanish treasure with wax and colour.

Henry Jenkins would bloody love Sparrow.
